MIDDLETOWN >> Carmelo D. (Carmen) Sampieri, 86, devoted husband of Ann (Fazzino) Sampieri of Middletown, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at home. He was born on May 26, 1927 in Derby, CT, son of the late Carmelo and Margarite Sampieri and grew up in Ansonia, CT.
He was a member of St. Sebastian's Church, where he was the General Chairman of the Feast for 15 years. He was a past President of the IACO, member of the Elks Lodge #771, two-time past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #3 and past Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree. He was elected to the first Parish Council, was a past President of the Holy Name Society and an usher at mass.
Carmen owned and operated Family Cleaners in Old Saybrook, CT and after retiring, worked for Aetna for 10 years. He was well known and respected in his community for his service to his church, his kindness and generosity, and his love for his friends and family, especially for his beautiful wife of 65 years. He is survived by his wife, Ann, his daughters, Joanne Sampieri and Marie Vernik, his grandchildren Kristen (Steven) Esteves and Eric (Tara) Eyles, his great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Meadow, Sydney and Dan, who their Poppa adored, and his sister Marge Guliuzza and Nellie Funaro. He was predeceased by his brothers Michael, Emilio, Joseph, Orlando, William, Samuel, Anthony and Norman, and his sisters Frances Sampieri, Ann Ferillo and Frances Rusinik.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:15 a.m. in St. Sebastian's Church. Burial will be in St. Sebastian's cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Thursday night at D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 S. Main St. from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday morning at St Sebastian's Church from 10 to 11:15 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
