AUSTIN S. MYERS Jr.

MYERS, AUSTIN S., JR. Austin S. Myers, Jr., 84, of Davison Rd., Moodus, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at his home. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Austin S. Myers, Sr. of Town Street, East Haddam, and the late Honora (Byrnes) Myers. A veteran of the Korean War, Austin served in the U.S. Marines Corps. He was initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa Society in 1950 and received his graduate degree from Yale University. After spending many years overseas and in postings in the United States with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Army, he retired and returned to Connecticut. His public service included time in Vietnam during the war. He was an avid sports fan and a diehard Yankees fan to the end. He loved ice hockey and during his free time while living in Germany, he played in a senior hockey league and even officiated games as a certified referee. When he retired, he returned to weight lifting and set bench press records for his age group in Connecticut. He competed in world competitions to include Zakopane, Poland and Chicago, Illinois. He was a current member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in East Haddam. Austin is survived by his beloved son, Charles Myers, devoted daughter-in-law Wioletta Brozek Myers, and his granddaughter, whom he cherished, Athena Myers of Poland. His daughter Honora Myers of Washington, D.C. resided with him in Moodus during his brief illness. Funeral services will be held Friday (Nov. 14th) at 11 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be private at the Town Street Cemetery. Friends may call at the Biega Funeral Home on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the services.
