Edna V. Rice Born: Aug. 22, 1920; in North Tonawanda, NY Died: May 19, 2015; in DeKalb, IL Edna VanEssa Rice, 94, of Genoa, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015, in Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb. She was born August 22, 1920, in North Tonawanda, NY, daughter of John and Letha (Huff) Thom. She married Edwin C. Rice on June 12, 1943, in Waukegan. She was "Company Mother" at Franklin Screw, the company her husband founded in 1955. She enjoyed genealogy, charitable giving and after losing her eyesight, audio books. Edna was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin. Survivors include her son, David Rice of Genoa; grandchildren, Cody, Wesley and Dillon Rice and Nathaniel, Christopher and Benjamin Brown; and daughter-in-law, Samantha Rice. Predeceased by her husband, Edwin; and daughters, Jeanette and Juanita. The family will hold a private graveside service at the Burlington Union Cemetery, Burlington, IL. Rote, Margaret P.  
Margaret P. Rote Born: July 21, 1916 Died: May 16, 2015 Margaret P. Rote, age 98, of Sycamore, passed away peacefully at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center on May 16, 2015. She was born July 21, 1916, in Oglesby, IL, the daughter of Arthur and Martha (Phillips) Peterson. Margaret moved to Sycamore in 1926 with her family when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Sycamore High School in 1933, and then graduated from the Metropolitan Business College in Aurora in 1934. Her first employment was at Ideal Industries where she worked as a bookkeeper until 1940. Her next employment was as a bookkeeper for Fargo Motors where she worked for over 45 years retiring in 1993. She lived her life by the principle that "it is better to give than to receive." Margaret will be remembered for her kind, loving heart. She always had a positive attitude toward life, and was a friend to everyone. She was a blessing to her family and friends, and had a thoughtful and generous spirit. She loved her family very much, enjoyed spending time with them, and hosting and attending many family gatherings over the years. She enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles, writing and sending cards, receiving cards, visiting with family and friends on the phone or in her apartment, and reading the Bible. She was an active member of the Sycamore Methodist Church for over 75 years volunteering in many areas of the church. Margaret is survived by one son, Bradley (Sharon) Rote; two grandchildren, Scott (Jody) Rote, Mokena, IL, and Lisa (Ron) Blair, Parker, CO; 5 great-grandchildren, Nicole, Jenny, and Kyle Rote, and Kaitlyn and Allison Blair. She was a special "Auntie" to Kris Crane, Karleen (Rick) Olson, Margaret (Bryan) Fredrick, Roger Sherer, Steven (Lin) Sherer and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings and their spouses, Lucille (Bob) Sherer, Bud (Georgianne) Peterson; and her niece, Kathryn Ireton. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015, in the Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Avenue, Sycamore, IL with Reverend Harlene Harden officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore, immediately following the church service. Margaret's family would like to thank Doctor Thakkar, the Health Center West staff at Oak Crest and the KishHealth System Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Food Pantry at Sycamore United Methodist Church or KishHealth System Hospice in her name. Rubel Ph.D., Daniel N.  
Daniel N. Rubel, Ph.d. Born: Sept. 15, 1927; in Detroit, MI Died: May 17, 2015; in Geneva, IL Daniel N. Rubel, Ph.D., age 87, of St. Charles, formerly of DeKalb, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He was born on September 15, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Nicholas and Edith (Behr) Rubel. Daniel served our country in the United States Coast Guard in World War II. He received his Masters of Science degree from Wayne State in 1959 and his Ph.D from the University of Michigan in 1964. He was a geologist and taught at Northern Illinois University. He was an avid reader and loved the outdoors; he especially enjoyed growing tomatoes and red roses. He was a caring father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children, B. Anastasia (Paul) Rubel Cyr of Colorado, Sarah L. (Andy) Totman of Geneva, Nick D.(Candy) Rubel of Texas, and Major Dan N. (Rita) Rubel Jr. of Florida; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother Douglas (Carlotta) Rubel of Florida; former wife Glorya; and many dear family and friends. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Fred (Velma) Bazhenow. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva. Prayer and farewell will include full military honors at 3:00 at the same location. Interment will be held privately.
