Shirley Thompson Born: December 27, 1929 Died: June 27, 2016 Shirley Thompson, age 86 of Big Rock, IL, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 at her home. She was born on December 27, 1929 in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Theodore and Sarah Juanita (Johnson) McCann. Shirley was united in marriage on January 9, 1949 to Bruce Thompson and they spent the next 67 happy years together. She was a 1948 graduate of East Aurora High School in Aurora, IL and was the Valedictorian of her class. Shirley was a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ for many years and served as its organist. She was employed over the years as a bookkeeper and at one time worked for the Aurora Beacon News. Shirley taught both the organ and piano to many area students. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Shirley is survived by her husband, Bruce Thompson of Big Rock, IL; her children, Jerald (Sue) Thompson of Big Rock, IL, Cheryl Groetsema of LaGrange Park, IL and Linda (James) Peterson of Maple Park, IL; her grandchildren, Jonathon Thompson, Jodi (John) Diehl, Carrie (Lt. Col. William) Herrmann, Ted (Heidi) Peterson, William (Carly) Groetsema, and Steven (Suzanne) Groetsema; her 16 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Sarah Juanita McCann; her granddaughter, Karen Thompson; her brother, Donald McCann and her son-in-law, William Groetsema DDS. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Nash-Nelson Memorial Chapel, 141 Maple St, Hinckley, IL, with Rev. Charlene Hinckley, officiating. Interment will follow in the West Big Rock Cemetery in Big Rock, IL. A Visitation will be held from 3:30 PM until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the Nash-Nelson Memorial Chapel in Hinckley, IL. Rodney C. Turner Born: March 3, 1939 Died: June 25, 2016 Rodney C. Turner, 77, of Sycamore, died Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore. He was born March 3, 1939 in Neillsville, Wisconsin the son of Wilbur and Ina (Jake) Turner. He married Cheryl White Doubler on August 21, 1992 in Sycamore. He worked as a Supervisor at Anaconda Wire and Cable for 22 years and then Ideal Industries for 17 years. Rodney enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed listening to old radio shows and spending time with the grandchildren especially their sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Sycamore; son, Todd (Melissa) Turner of Sycamore; daughter, Marla (Tom) Farone of Rockford; stepdaughter, Karyn (Craig Michaelis) Smith of Cortland; grandchildren, Sarie (Michael Lorence) Turner of Sycamore and Jake Turner of Sycamore; brother, Tyrone (Donna) Turner of Cherry Valley; sisters, Judy Turner of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and Joanne (Charlie) Fruit of Kirkland; mother-in law, Betty White of Cortland; and sisters in-law, Paula (Robert) McCall of DeKalb, Andrea (Dean) Bolton of Malta, and Laurie (John) Lindstrom of Malta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law Bacile White. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Quiram Kirkland Chapel, 309 South Fifth St., Kirkland, IL 60146 with the Pastor Judy Harris of the First Congregational UCC Church of DeKalb officiating. Interment will be in Charter Oak Cemetery near Kirkland. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral chapel.
