Laura J. English Born: Dec. 14, 1941; in Chicago, IL Died: June 22, 2015; in Elgin, IL Laura J. English, 73, passed away on June 22, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She is survived by her daughters, Victoria (Steven) Lundy of Elgin and Valerie (Joseph) Donndelinger of Dearborn, Michigan, and grandson Ryne Lundy of Elgin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; and grandson, Rhett Lundy; as well as her faithful companion dogs, Max and Corky. She was born on December 14, 1941, in Chicago to Lawrence A. Joseph and Rose G. Joseph (nee Travis, of Ontario, Canada). She married Joseph J. English of Chicago on September 7, 1963; they made homes in Chicago, DeKalb, Maple Park, Sycamore, Elgin, Glendale Heights, and finally Champaign before returning to South Elgin to be near family. She had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Elgin. She was a 1960 graduate of DeKalb High School. In 1985 she completed her undergraduate studies with a B.A. in history from Northern Illinois University. Her continued passion for lifelong learning led her to earn an M.A. from North Central College and to pursue a PhD in Educational Policy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She had completed coursework and begun writing her dissertation when she was sidelined by declining health in 2013. She had been employed by RR Donnelley & Sons in Elgin, Cooking Masters in Elgin, Glenbard Township District #87 in Glen Ellyn, had been self-employed as freelance editor of theses and dissertations, and most recently held a graduate assistantship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Visitation will be at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin on Wednesday, July 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with funeral immediately following at 7:00 p.m. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Presence Hospice, "May Your Beat Live On" the Rhett P. Lundy Memorial, the Myocarditis Foundation, or to the Humane Society of your choice.
