Harry L. Smith Born: February 3, 1926 Died: June 24, 2016 Harry L. Smith, 90, died Friday, June 24, 2016, at Regency Care Center in Sterling, Illinois. He was born February 3, 1926, in Monmouth, Illinois; the fourth son in a family of five brothers. He joined the Navy at 17 and served as a deck crewman on the Prince William aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. When the Prince William was decommissioned, he was reassigned to the USS Langley and served on that ship until he left active duty in 1947. He worked for Commonwealth Edison for forty years before retiring in 1985. Harry was an accomplished woodworker and carved multiple ducks for family and friends over the years. He was always quick with a joke and had a great sense of humor, loving to make people smile. His family was his greatest joy in life and he cherished any time spent with them. He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Janice; two children, Cindy Morris (late Dan Marrs) of Venice, FL and Linda (Earl) Fett of Kirkland, IL; along with his only grandchild and the light of his life, Jeffrey (Keela) Fett of Belmont, CA. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Regency Care in Sterling and to Beacon of Hope Hospice who were just wonderful with their help and care. A graveside service will be held at a future time at the Illinois Veteran's Cemetery per his wishes. Memorials may be made to the Kirkland Public Library, Kirkland, IL, the Harry Smith Memorial Fund at Regency Care Center in Sterling, IL, or to Beacon of Hope Hospice in Davenport, IA.
