GENOA – Augusta "Gussie" L. Johnson, 94, of Genoa, Ill., passed away at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, after a brief illness.
She was born March 6, 1920, in Shelbyville, daughter of Birney and Rose Mae (Kull) Hite. Gussie graduated in 1937, from Anderson High School, in Anderson, Ind., graduated from Purdue University B.S.H.E. in 1941, and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
Gussie married Eric A. Johnson, Jr. on March 21, 1942, in Sacramento, Calif. Gussie and Eric lived in Chicago before moving to Crawfordsville, Ind. In 2005, they moved to Genoa to be closer to their son. Eric passed away Feb. 18, 2008. Gussie moved into her son and daughter-in-law's home in Genoa. Gussie was able to enjoy her grandsons and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Crawfordsville, Ind. and later the Cornerstone UMC, Elgin. Gussie was an avid reader, loved knitting, painting, traveling and cooking. She was a member of Dorothy Q Chapter NSDAR, Crawfordsville, Ind., Athenian, Tri-Kappa, Art League and Crawfordsville Country Club. She served on boards including Crawfordsville Library, Asbury Towers (Greencastle, Ind.) and First United Methodist Church, Crawfordsville.
Gussie and Eric traveled the world.
The family would like to thank the staff of KishHealth System Hospice/Transition and especially Jolene O'Donnell and Mary Safford. Thank you to the many doctors, nurses and staff in the ICU unit at Kishwaukee Hospital for their professional and loving care.
Survivors include children, Eric (Debra) Johnson, Stephen (Barbara) Johnson and Leslie Johnson; grandchildren, Pastor Matthew W.H. (Emily) Johnson, Birney H.D. (Angela) Johnson, Stephen A.D. Johnson and Christian David (Tamara) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Liberty Kull, Ethan, Madisyn, Alexander, Amanda and Chris; nieces and nephews, Janet (Hershal) Miller, Julie (Ron) Stringer, Julie (Bruce) Rogowski, Dave (Cindy) Stewardson and Rich (Beth) Stewardson; host of great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband; niece, Barbara Stewardson; sister and brother-in-law, Robert Stewardson.
A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014, in the Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 41W170 Russell Road, Elgin, with Pastors Jim Bell and Seamus Enright officiating.
