DeKALB – Betty Marjean Snyder, 88, of DeKalb, Ill., took her first breath in Heaven Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, from Bethany Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, DeKalb.
Born Jan. 26, 1925, in Greenville, Mich., the daughter of Raymond and Frances (Weeks) VanVlerah, Betty was a 1942 graduate of Greenville High School. The family moved to Chicago in 1942, where she met her lifelong love, Wilbert K. "Ken" Snyder, and they were married Feb. 27, 1943, at First United Methodist Church in DeKalb.
Betty and Ken moved in 1946 to DeKalb, where they made their home until 1985, when Betty retired from General Electric after 34 years of service. During this time, she also worked as a waitress at The Steak House and Hillside restaurants for many years. In 1972, they bought a home on Burgess Lake outside Greenville, Michigan, where they moved after their retirement. They also spent many winters in Pharr, Texas, due to Ken's health.
Ken and Betty raised three sons and three daughters, and touched the lives of many of their children's friends and church friends, sharing with anyone who needed food and love. She was a Sunday school teacher, missionary director and church secretary at the Church of the Nazarene, DeKalb, where she met her Savior in 1958. She also was a member of Gen-E-Dek Club and a Cub Scout den mother.
She loved to sing, whether it was the church choir or Celebration Chorale. She said her most joyful time singing was the last four years of her life, when she would join with her son, Keith, at the local Bluegrass Jamboree and the Basically Bluegrass Band, and sing her beloved gospel music.
After retirement, she found her ability to paint and crochet, making numerous afghans, scarves and throws for family and friends. She loved horticulture, reading and doing word-search puzzles.
She is survived by her daughters, Valerie (Jim) Harris of DeKalb and Marcia (Bob) Montgomery of DeKalb; sons, Keith (Patty) Snyder of Sycamore and Terry (Susan) Gates of Colleyville, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Donna Wilbanks of Monkena, Barbara (Ken) Moser of Greenville, Richard (Bonnie) VanVlerah and Roger (Nancy) VanVlerah, both of Cortland, and Dolores "Dolly" (John) Yerly of Steward; and sister-in-law, Zelma Tadd of DeKalb.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Ken, in 2011; son, Kenneth R. (Kathy) Snyder in 2003; daughter, Marilynn Prothero in 2011; grandson, Jeremy Gates in 2012; two great-grandsons in infancy; her parents; and a brother in infancy.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Nathan Rodehaver of First Church of the Nazarene, DeKalb, officiating.
