DeKALB – Dr. Elizabeth Jane (Adair) Wood, born Dec. 8, 1930, in Scranton, Pa., to Earl and Margaret Adair, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012.
She attended Wilson College and Yale University
where she earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology. While at Yale, she met and married Joseph Miller Wood III on Aug. 23, 1959. They moved to DeKalb in 1968 with their two young sons, William and Paul. She worked the majority of her career at the Northern Illinois University Graduate School, and spent the later years of her life enjoying retirement.
She and Joseph traveled, and Elizabeth was a member of several local Women's groups including Beta Sigma Phi, the DeKalb Women's Club and the University Women's Club. She volunteered widely, giving her time to The Country Store and Meals on Wheels among other charities. She had many passions and was a lover of gardening, art and music, and was an active member of First Congregational Church of DeKalb, where she sang in the choir.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret; and is survived by her husband and two sons, as well as her granddaughter, Luna.
She will be interred at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Waverly, Pa. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5, at First Congregational Church of DeKalb, 615 N. First St.
