DES MOINES – Michael L. Wig, 62, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Sycamore, Ill., passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Born Feb. 28, 1951, in Sycamore, the son of Chester and Georgia (Howe) Wig, Mike married Laura Meyer on Oct. 25, 1985, in Des Moines.
Mike worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years. His interests included rooting for the Bears, playing online poker, scroll sawing, traveling and spending quality time with his loved ones. One of his favorite mottos was "Keep the Faith and Always Smile."
He is survived by his loving wife, Laura; children, Michele (Don) Barkman of Yorkville, Kristi Davis (Mike Ryan) of DeKalb and Brandon Wig of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Jordan and Ashli Davis, and Alexis Barkman; parents, Chester and Georgia Wig of Albuquerque, N.M.; siblings, David (Judy), Theresa (Paul), Daniel (Tracy), Timothy (Kristi), Christine, Steven (Cindy), Jeffrey (Geni) and Gregory; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Brian Gilbert of First United Methodist Church, DeKalb, officiating. Cremation will follow at Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, until the time of service at 7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home. A memorial for his many friends in Des Moines will be held at a later date.
