1921 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
SANDWICH – Dorothy Ione Hecathorn, 92, of Sandwich, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Sandwich Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Sandwich.
Born July 30, 1921, in Sandwich, the daughter of Maurice and Alice (Appel) Smith, she married Chester J. Hecathorn on June 15, 1946, in Sandwich.
Dorothy was a member of the United Church of Sandwich, the Hope Circle at the Church, the Waterman Grange and a past Sunday school teacher. As a young lady she was active in the Buzzin Dozen Ladies Club. She enjoyed working the Sandwich Fair at the Log Cabin and serving church lunches. Dorothy worked at New Idea, General Telephone and retired from CTS Knights after more than 30 years. She cherished all of her family, enjoyed going to her grandson's sporting activities, was a devoted fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bears. Dorothy enjoyed reading, baking, gardening, crossword puzzles and loved an opportunity to travel and sightsee. She spent many hours on her family genealogy and local history.
She is survived by one son, Gary (Elaine) Hecathorn of East Peoria; one daughter, Corinne (Richard) Parson of Yorkville; four grandchildren, Chad (Tina) Hecathorn of Sparland, Joseph Maly of Keizer, Ore., Trisha Renken of Germantown Hills and Scott (Jenell) Hecathorn of Metamora; three great-grandchildren, Kathryn and Cassidy Renken and Olivia Hecathorn; two sisters, Marjorie (Eugene) Hash of Somonauk and Elaine Kittleson of DeKalb; one brother, Gerald (Sharon) Smith of Eustis, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Kathleen Hecathorn; two brothers, Wendell and James Smith; and one sister, Beverly Kolka.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, with Pastor Jonathan Singleton officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Sandwich. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home.
