Erdine Babcock Gletty, age 97, of Waterman, IL passed away on December 26, 2017 at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, IL.

She was born on May 23, 1920 in the East Side Hospital in Waterman, IL the daughter of Otto and Sophie (Dreher) Babcock. Erdine attended Waterman schools and was a 1938 graduate of Waterman High School. She continued her education and graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA with a Bachelor of Arts in Homemaking in June of 1942. Erdine taught one year at the Varna High School in Varna, IL. Erdine then enlisted in the Navy W.A.V.E.S. and served for two years. She was a Link Trainer Instructor, teaching Navy Cadets their instrumental flight. Staff Sgt. Clinton Gletty and SpT2nd Class Erdine Babcock were married in the Chapel at the Naval Air Station Cuddihy Field, Corpus Christi, TX, by the Navy Chaplain on May 6, 1945. Following their discharges from the Service, they made their home in Waterman.

Erdine was a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary unit 654 from the age seven and then became a senior member for the rest of her life. She joined the Waterman United Methodist Church when she was nine. She was active in the auxiliary and the church locally and for a time at the district level. She was secretary of the Waterman Church for over 20 years and was a life member of the Waterman Area Heritage Society. Erdine enjoyed her family, visiting, reading, playing Bridge and other card and board games, knitting and computer solitaire. Erdine was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and daughter who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Erdine is survived by her children, Gary Gletty of Normal, IL, Bruce Gletty of Champaign, IL and Andi Gletty of Kelseyville, CA; her granddaughters, Meredith Gletty of Champaign, IL and Lauren Gletty of Levittown, PA; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clinton Gletty on December 18, 2001; her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Marilou Babcock.

A Memorial Gathering will be held in May of 2018.
