DeKALB – Katherine Irene (Buffington) Nehring, 93, of DeKalb, Ill., died Friday, March 22, 2013, at home.
Born March 9, 1920, in Wayne City, Ill., the daughter of Dennis and Hattie (Johnson) Buffington, Katherine married John W. Nehring in 1939.
Katherine was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, DeKalb. She was formerly employed at Wurlitzer Piano and Brody's Coat Factory. She also worked at Dot's Restaurant while John was in the service overseas in Germany, France and Belgium.
She was one of 10 children from a farming family that milked 40 cows before walking two miles to and from school. The family had a large garden during the Depression so Katherine learned to love gardening. She also enjoyed sewing, making slip covers and clothes.
Katherine was a self-starter and hard worker, often working eight hours at Brody's, then returning home to help her husband on the farm by driving the tractor or delivering pigs, while still making dinner for her family every night, as well as keeping her home clean.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Nehring of DeKalb; two grandchildren, Ann Marie and Brian John; two sisters, Mabel Reinken of Sycamore, Dolores Humpfrey of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2002; three sisters; four brothers; and her parents.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb with the Rev. Ray Krueger of Immanuel Lutheran Church, DeKalb officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Katherine I. (Buffington) Nehring Memorial Fund, sent in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.
