1911 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
DeKALB – L. Octavia Deatherage, 101, of DeKalb, Ill., died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb, surrounded by her family.
Born Nov. 5, 1911, in Imboden, Ark., the daughter of William Addison and Mary Edna (Hedrick) Hudson, Octavia married T. Noble Deatherage, her husband of 64 years, on Dec. 27, 1939, in Black Rock, Ark.
An accomplished artist, Octavia was active in the Kishwaukee Valley Art League for several years and had many art gallery affiliations. She taught art class for several years both in Imboden and in DeKalb. She and her students often exhibited their paintings, and she had numerous one-person shows. Her paintings and other artwork reflect the sensitivity of a very talented artist.
Octavia was a Bible scholar and an active, charter member of Victory Baptist Church. She was an excellent cook and loved to cook for her family. Octavia cooked everything from "scratch." Her chicken and dumplings and barbecue were family favorites. Loved for her grace and wisdom, Octavia dearly loved her family and was devoted to them. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Deanna (Lee) Sexton of DeKalb and Carolyn Deatherage of Madison, Wis.; son, Steven Deatherage of Madison; grandsons, Trent (Joelle) Sexton of DeKalb and Barry Sexton of Doha, Qatar; great-grandchildren, Blake, Sarayna and Coby; and sister, Opal (Harlie) Brown of DeKalb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Noble; sisters, Evelyn (Dewey) Rexroad and Lillian (Oliver) Knauss; and brother, Bill (Audrey) Hudson.
The memorial service will be held at noon Monday, July 1, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Eric Mangek of Victory Baptist Church, DeKalb, officiating. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the L. Octavia Deatherage Memorial Fund, sent in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
