ROCHELLE – Marvin L. Madsen, 82, of Rochelle, Illinois, passed away from cancer May 11, 2014, at Rochelle Rehab and Nursing Home.|
He was born Aug. 21, 1931, in Ringstead, Iowa, to John and Lizzie Madsen.
After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Minnesota (St. Paul farm campus) for one year before serving in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he went back to the university for another year.
Marvin married Sylvia Daniels on Sept. 1, 1956, in Bruce, Wisconsin. He worked for many years at DeKalb AgResearch, then Illinois Crop Improvement Association. He made many trips to Puerto Rico for the winter grow-outs in seed corn. He also made one trip to Hawaii and Costa Rica.
Marvin was a member of the Lutheran Faith, The Rochelle Lions Club and the American Legion.
He enjoyed shooting pool and playing bingo at the Hub City Center and also traveling. His number one love was his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, sons, Arne (Jan) and Marlin (Kathy), daughter, Gail (Eddie) Connatser, and one granddaughter, Andrea (Ande) Madsen, all of Rochelle; two brothers, Raymond of Kasson, Minnesota and Lyle (Judy) of Kettle River, Minnesota; one sister, Ruby Gilbertson of Baldwin, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter; sister-in-law, Clarice; and brother-in-law, Allen Gilbertson.
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Beverage-Lyons Family Funeral Home, 704 N. Sixth St., Rochelle. The memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Friday with Chaplain Judy Williams officiating.
