1938 - 2012 Obituary Condolences Flowers
SYCAMORE – Elsie M. Atkinson, 74, of Sycamore, Ill., died at 5:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, in her home.
Born June 17, 1938, in DeKalb, to Clifford and Mary (Shearer) VanDusen, Elsie married Grover Atkinson on Jan. 25, 1958, in Kingston United Methodist Church.
She owned the Bumblebee Beauty Shop in Genoa, and then later worked as a village clerk in Kingston. She also was employed at Greenlee Tools and Automatic Electric. Elsie was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church where she participated in UMCOR. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, volunteered at the Kingston library, loved to travel and paint.
Elsie is survived by her ex-husband and friend, Grover; children, Juanita (Jack) Burke of DeKalb, Gwen (Martin) Gilbert of Arizona, Randy (Roberta) Atkinson of Kingston and Rick (Pam) Atkinson of DeKalb; five grandchildren, Sarah Burke, Amber Atkinson, Sean Burke, Joshua Atkinson and Amanda Atkinson; two step-grandchildren, Joshua Bridge and Danielle Biedron; one great-grandchild, Aiden Rick Atkinson; three step-great-grandchildren, Joshua Bailey, Riley Bridge and Lucas Biedron; brother, Russell (Shirley) VanDusen of Belvidere; many nieces and nephews; special long-time friend, Berna Poppenhagen; special daughter, Teresa Brandt; and special granddaughters, April, Ashley and Rachel.
She was predeceased by her parents and two infant siblings, Donna Mae and Robert Lee.
The family offers special thanks to DeKalb County Hospice for their excellent care.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Cooper-Quiram Chapel, 202 E. Main St., Genoa, with the Rev. Harlene Harden officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at Highland Memorial Gardens in Belvidere.
