CORTLAND – Mary E. Carter, 92, of Cortland, Ill., died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. |
She was born May 13, 1921, in Amsterdam, Mo., the daughter of Harry Stewart and Lola (Sergeant) Morwood.
Mary was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving during World War II. She attained the rank of corporal and taught instrumental flying to pilots.
Mary received her bachelor's degree in education and worked as an elementary school teacher in Missouri, Florida and Arkansas for more than 35 years.
Survivors include one son, Harry (Martha) Carter; five grandsons, Billy (Glenda) McSpadden, Jeremy Miles, Nathaniel Miles, Morgan S. (Amy Lyn) Carter and Harrison H. Carter; five great-grandchildren, Rachael, Alyssa, Caleb, Mackenzie and Hunter; and two nieces, Roberta Kitchens and Jonnie Porter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Carter; two daughters, Grace Illene Miles and Victoria E. Aclin; and three sisters, Grace Carrol, Fern Glassmire and Wanda Wininger.
Her service and burial will be private.
