SYCAMORE – Dorothy L. Benson, 88, of Sycamore, Ill., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.|
Born Jan. 24, 1925, in Clare, the daughter of Alfred and Mamie (Walker) Olson, she married Harry L. Benson on June 28, 1947, in Sycamore.
Dorothy was a secretary at Chicago Title and Trust Co., a cook for the Sycamore School District, and a bookkeeper for Ben Franklin, Farmer's Grain and Lumber, WSQR radio and Brown's County Market.
She enjoyed playing the accordion and had a lot of fun playing in the accordion band. Her love for cooking made for many wonderful family dinners. She adored her grandchildren and had a passion for sewing.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church of Sycamore and a long-time member of South Burlington Ladies Aid.
Survivors include her three sons, David (Dianne) Benson of Sycamore, Gerald (Deborah) Benson of Clare and Dale (Debra) Benson of DeKalb; five grandchildren, Darcy (Marty) Didio, Dana (Dan) Wyzard, Lynelle (T.J.) Lynd, Brett (Ashley) Benson and Andrew (Lindsey) Benson; eight great-grandchildren, Garrett, Samantha, Aiden, Cooper, Olivia, Elliott, Emmett and Remy; one sister, Marie Carlson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry in 2008; and two brothers, Leroy and Lloyd Olson.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, with the Rev. Robert C. Kinnear officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore.
