Bernadette Lowe Obituary
Bernadette Lowe, of Milford, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on April 2, 2016.

Mrs. Lowe was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She lived and worked in New York City; Bayonne, N.J.; and Matawan, N.J., before retiring with Chester and Nancy to Milford in 1974.

The proudest part of her life, second only to her family, was her military service in the Marine Corps during World War II. Her entire life was a reflection of her fierce loyalty in service to her country. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Lowe saw the embodiment of the phrase, "Once a Marine, always a Marine."

Mrs. Lowe was also very proud to have been the first woman in the architectural drafting classes in the Cleveland schools, after petitioning the school board to allow her into a previously men-only field. She would later serve as the youngest certified vocational teacher in Ohio. Her architectural skills were legendary, and she designed and oversaw construction of five houses lived in by her family and her daughter's family.

Mrs. Lowe was an active member of the Milford community, and for many years she held the highest total hours on record for volunteering at Milford Memorial Hospital. She also volunteered at the Milford Library, at her church, St. John the Apostle, and through her membership and presidency of Milford Garden Club. Her membership in the Marine Corps League was a bright spot in her later years.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Lowe Hoerauf, and son-in-law Roy Hoerauf of Sterling, Va.; her son-in-law Robert Doyle, of Wilmington; and her nephews, Michael Scanlon of Cleveland, Ohio; Patrick Scanlon of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and Thomas Butler of West Chester, Pa.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lowe, in 1994; her sister, Eileen Schultz, in 2007; and her daughter, Ann Doyle, in 2011. She was adored by her grandchildren, Gregory Doyle and his wife, Mamie, of Townsend; Michael Doyle of New York City; Chris Hoerauf of Allentown, Pa.; Elizabeth Hoerauf of Sonora, Calif.; Daniel Hoerauf of Charlottesville, Va.; and five great-grandchildren, Lucy, Ted, Nick, William, and Catherine Doyle, all of Townsend.
The family would like to thank the staff of Broadmeadow Cadia Rehabilitation in Middletown, and Seasons Hospice for their exceptional care and support.

A private interment ceremony was held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear. A memorial mass will be offered on Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 371 East Main Street in Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Milford Public Library, 11 S E Front St, Milford, DE 19963.
