George A. Alves

Long time golfer, artist and businessman, George A. Alves, 78, died on October 24, 2012 in the company of his dear friends, Tom and Mary Creighton. Born and raised in Milford, he was a graduate of Milford High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Fairbanks, Alaska during the Korean War. Mr. Alves was successfully self employed his entire career. While residing in Milford he owned and operated Town and Country Cleaning Service as well as Main Street Laundromat. He moved to Cape Cod in 1970 where he continued to operate Town and Country Service for many years. He was an avid low handicap golfer, and a member of Cummaquid Golf Club. He was former club champion at four different Massachusetts Golf Clubs: Milford Golf Club, Pine Ridge Country Club, Hopedale Country Club, and Iyannough Hills Country Club, now Hyannis Golf Club. He also had the pleasure of having four holes in one during his golf career. He enjoyed flowers, gardening, fishing and cooking. He had a love for music and was an accomplished artist with a love for pastels, having been taught by American Impressionist, Sam Barber. He is survived by his former wife and lifelong devoted friend, Eleanor (Bibbo) Alves of South Yarmouth. He also leaves his daughter, Anna Marie Balzarini and her husband Lester of Brewster, a son Peter G. Alves, formerly of Yarmouth Port, and his wife Beth H. Minzter, MD, both now of Chagrin Falls, OH, daughter Rachel Alves and her significant other, Dan McCarthy of West Stockbridge, MA, a brother Joey, three sisters, Mamie, Sylvia and Dina, as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends on Cape Cod. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday October 28, from 3 - 5 pm at the Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth. Burial with military honors will be held at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA, at a later date.
