Alice Roche Obituary

Alice B. Roche, 94, passed away on May 5, 2011, at her residence at Cumberland Crossing Retirement Home in Carlisle, Pa. Born July 19, 1916 in Waterville, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Herbert C. and Elizabeth Parks Bridges. Her husband of 50 years, Joseph W. Roche, preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1989. Alice spent most of her childhood in Uxbridge. She and her twin sister, Marguerite, spent most of their youth swimming and training for competition in the Uxbridge area. She held three World records and twenty American records. The highpoint of her athletic career was being part of the USA Summer Olympic team. She participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and won the Bronze Metal for the 100-meter backstroke competition. It was a special Olympic well remembered for Hitler and Jesse Owens. She cherished gatherings with family and friends, playing golf, traveling worldwide and of course swimming into her early nineties. She loved art and painting and was especially proud of the numerous awards she received for her portrait paintings. Surviving are two children, Marguerite Price and Joseph Roche; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Private funeral services will be held at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, Pa., and she will be placed to rest with her husband in Cherry Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Cumberland Crossing Benevolent Care Endowment, 1 Longsdorf Way, Carlisle, Pa 17015 or Hospice of Central Pennsylvania. Hello, I just met your cousin, Bill Lynch, who told me about your mother's passing. I send my condolences to your families. I used to cut her lawn and deliver her newspaper when I was a teenager. Bill Waterhouse, formerly of Carney St. Uxbridge, MA

Hello Joe, Peggy & families,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. I remember well the bridge dedication and we just went over it yesterday and thought of Auntie Alice. May she rest in peace.

I was saddened to read of Mrs. Roches's passing. My parents, Bette and Bunker Hill, were very dear friends from those glorious years spent golfing and swimming at Old York Country Club. Mrs. Roche's elegance as a swimmer was exceeded only by her elegence as a person. Please take comfort knowing that she has been welcomed by many friends in heaven.

Dear Joe and Peggy and families.
I read of your mother's passing in today's Times. To lose a mother is very hard, it is ten years since my beloved Edna Roche passed. They were friends, your mom and mine. Mother loved going to see your Mom and Dad. The few times I met Alice, she was kind and caring. I am sorry for your loss but glad for the enrichment she made in welcoming my mom to your family. Love , Pat Tomko
