George E. Sweeney, 72, of Franklin, died peacefully, Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at Norwood Hospital following an illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Donovan) Sweeney. Born October 8, 1940 in the West Roxbury section of Boston, a son of the late Fredrick L. and Alice M. (McLaughlin) Sweeney, he was a resident of Franklin since 1966. He was raised and educated in Boston, and was a graduate of English High School, he also attended Providence College. George was a retired auto salesman, having worked for the former Patalano Ford and Chrysler dealerships in Franklin and was a bartender at the former Harp and Bard restaurant in Norwood. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He was a passionate pool player, and belonged to the American Pool Association; he enjoyed golfing, vintage cars, and watching the Red Sox and Patriots. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time spent with his family. In addition to his wife of 48 years, he is survived by his children; Lynne M. Marchand and her husband James of Franklin, Mary Beth Mohan and her husband Brian of Wellesley and George E. Ed Sweeney, Jr. of North Attleboro, a brother Fredrick L. Sweeney, Jr. and his wife Karen of Bonita Springs, Florida. He was the brother of the late Anne Donovan and Marjorie English. Also surviving are his grandchildren John A. Jake Mohan, Ryan D. Mohan and Avery E. Mohan. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Saturday Oct. 12th, at 9:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin, with a funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, 1 Church Sq. at 10AM. Interment will follow at St. Marys Cemetery.
