Josephine M. (Mele) Burns, 88, of Milford died Thursday, November 14, 2013 at home surrounded by loved ones. She was the wife of Benjamin T. Burns, Jr. A lifelong resident of Milford, Mrs. Burns was born July 30, 1925 in Milford, daughter of the late Guiseppe and Maria (Gala) Mele and attended Milford Catholic schools. Mr. & Mrs. Burns observed their 67th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2013. She was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Milford. Pena was a gentle woman possessing quite a sense of humor. Pena was a devoted wife and a loving mother. Her family and friends will always remember her as a selfless woman who always put everyone's needs and happiness before her own. She enjoyed vacations to their family cottage in Gilmanton, NH with their family and friends. Pena enjoyed golfing and bowling. In her later years she enjoyed miniature golf with her grandchildren. Pena was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching all sports. In addition to her husband Benjamin, she is survived by three daughters, Kathleen M. Breuer of Mediapolis IA, Maureen Rogers of Bellingham and Doreen Furphy and her husband Paul of Milford; a sister Lena Calzone of Milford; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, James V. Mele, Carlo J. Mele, Savino N. "Chippy" Mele and Louis P. Mele and two sisters, Lina Mele and Rose Saracino. Visiting hours will be Monday, November 18, 2013 from 6-8 PM in the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday November 19, 2013 at 8 AM from the BUMA-SARGEANT FUNERAL HOME, 42 Congress St., Milford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM in the Chapel of the Holy Spouses Mary and Joseph in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 7 East Main St., Milford.
