Alexander D. Heard Obituary
Alexander Denny Heard, 79, of Milford passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Countryside Health Care of Milford after a short illness. He was the husband of Linda J. (Heller) Marcus Heard. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Raymond. While in the Naval Reserves, he worked as a machinist at Consolidated Cork Corp. in NY. He was reactivated and sent to Newport, RI in 1961 where he decided to make his home and later work at the Newport Shipyard. He enjoyed a 25 year career as an Officer with the Newport Police Department before retiring in 1989. He had received numerous community, achievement, and heroism awards throughout his career. He spent the last 22 years in Milford. He was born on October 24, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY the son of the late Alexander D. and Mildred (Espy) Heard. In his youth, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was an accomplished track and field athlete who was a medalist in many events. He had also served as a Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America. In the early 1970s, he taught SCUBA diving to Newport children at Baileys Beach and also organized and was a member of the Newport Dive Team. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the St. Pauls Lodge #14 in Middletown, RI. Denny was also a volunteer at Milford Regional Medical Center where he recently received his 3000 hour service award for providing comfort, support, and humor to those who crossed his path and was known as the volunteer with Bert and Ernie in his pocket. In addition to his wife Linda of 19 years, he is survived by his children Stephanie and her husband Mark Newkirk of Hollywood, FL, Gwen Reynolds of Dighton, MA, Mark Butch and his wife Kim Heard of New Bedford, MA, Wendy and her husband Manny Arrenegado of Warren, RI, and Marion Mimi Heard of Newport, RI; three step-daughters Carol A. and her husband Brad Mattscheck, Julie E. and her husband Michael Campisi of Saco, ME, and Amy Gail Marcus of Milford; grandchildren Clifton, Paul, and Jesse Simisky, Jeffrey, Greg, and Nicolas Reynolds, Adriana Denny Heard, Amanda and Erik Arrenegado, and Savannah Collandret, Alexander W. and Melanie M. Mattscheck, Adam M., Katherine E., and Sarah Beth Campisi; 2 great-grandchildren, and cousins June Glendenning of Holicong, PA and Gerard Rubino of Citrus Springs, FL. Visiting hours will be Friday Aug. 8, 2014 from 4 | 8 PM in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford. Funeral services will be held Sat. Aug. 9, 2014 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home.
