Carl E. Paulson

Obituary Condolences

Mr. Carl Edmund Paulson, 98, of Upton, died peacefully on Sunday morning, July 1, 2012, at home, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Krenzer) Paulson, in 2002; his daughter, Elin Paulson in 2006; and a grandson, Dennis. Mr. Paulson was born in Providence, R.I., the son of Carl and Gerda (Petersson) Paulson. After graduating from Providence Technical High School in 1931, he attended Bostons Vesper George School of Art on a scholarship that he had won from an art competition. While attending school in Boston he was offered the position of a Glass Medallion Apprentice at the Charles Connick Stained Glass Art Studio. Mr. Connick taught Carl how to become an expert stained glass artisan. In 1941, he moved to Upton to work with the St. Benedict Catholic Worker Farm. In 1941, he married his beloved wife, Mary, and established his stained glass Raven Shop on Ridge Road. In 1947, Carl was introduced to architect Alfred Reinhardt, who was in charge of building the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas at the University of Connecticut. Carl submitted colored drawings of design ideas and was awarded the project. This helped to propel his amazing career of 60 years, creating more than 1,000 stained glass windows, mostly in New England. His son, Ken Paulson, and his grandson, Lars Paulson, continue to run the glass studio today. Mr. Paulson had been an active 65-year member of the Upton Grange. He was presently an active communicant of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Upton and had been active in the former Holy Angels Church in Upton. Mr. Paulson is survived by two daughters, Rose McCoy and her husband, Dan, of Webster Grove, Mo., and Honduras, and Helena Joyner and her husband, Steve, of Pensacola, Fla.; seven sons, Dennis Paulson and his wife, Pat, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Daniel Paulson and his wife, Homi, of Athens, La., Ken Paulson and his wife, Kristin, and Stephen Paulson, both of Upton, Carl Paulson and his wife, Dana, of Hampden, David Paulson and his wife, Leslie Whitcomb, of West Burk, Vt., and Ray Paulson and his wife, Meredith Goodhue, of Lowell; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many foster children. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, July 4, at 10 a.m., at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 151 Mendon St. in Upton. Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton. Visiting hours are Tuesday, July 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church in Upton. The family requests that flowers be omitted and a donation in Mr. Paulsons name be made to a charity of ones choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress St., Milford, MA.
