James Alfred Mello, 91 years old, of Framingham, died at his home on Saturday, March 16, 2013. Born in Dighton, son of the late Manuel F. and Mary E. (Souza) Mello, he was the loving and devoted husband of Mary E. (Dooley) Mello, who died ctober 10, 2012, and former husband of the late Margaret A. (Devine) Mello. He served with the Merchant Marines and in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945 following his tour of duty in the South Pacific. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was an automotive technician with the U.S. Postal Service for more than twenty years, during which he received numerous awards. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend. He is survived by his children, Robert M. Mello and his wife Sandi of Pembroke, Kathleen A. Mello of Attleboro, Deborah J. Geden of E. Bridgewater and Margaret A. Palmore and her husband Keith of Powhatan, VA; three sisters, Alice M. Hadayia of Dedham, Marie Szychoski of Elkton, FL and Louise Finitsis of Mansfield and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was brother of the late Manuel and Thomas Mello. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, 221 Concord Street, Framingham. Committal services and burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Eugene J. McCarthy and Sons Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln Street, Framingham. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
