Edward Martin Obituary
MARTIN, EDWARD Edward Martin was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1916 and passed away peacefully in Connecticut on 28 July 2013. He was predeceased by his sister, Olga Lavaty and his wife, Tess (Salvo) Martin and is survived by his daughter, Nanci Martin Smith, of Portsmouth, RI, his son, George Martin of Southport, CT. , three granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica Nelson, Kelly Martin , and two great grandsons Brendan Doyle and Orion Driscoll. He worked for the New York Times for over 40 years, starting as a copy boy in the 1930's and retiring as the Society Editor in 1981. Always patriotic, he especially enjoyed covering graduations and weddings at the Military Academies of West Point and Annapolis. He spent 10 months as a military correspondent in the Far East during the closing days of WWII, accompanying General MacArthur into Japan for the Japanese surrender in 1945. A longtime resident of Southport, CT, his hobbies included woodworking and cabinet making, photography, travel, gardening and following the New York sports teams. His favorite teams were the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. Burial will be private. Arrangements are in the care of the Fairfield Funeral Home of Edmund W. Dougiello, 36 South Pine Creek Road.
