BANKS, SHIRLEY VIRGINIA YATES Shirley Virginia Yates Banks, age 87, of Bridgeport and formerly of Fairfield, CT, beloved wife of 51 years of the late Donald L. Banks, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 13, 2013. Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Yates. Shirley graduated from Bassick High School and Butler Business School and worked as a secretary at General Electric before starting her family. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and volunteering at school and church. But, her true passion in life was her family. Shirley leaves behind her daughter, Janet Banks-Mott and her husband, Peter Mott; her son, Donald Kenneth Banks and his wife, Bonnie; and another son, Robert Banks and his wife, Mary. In addition, Shirley always felt blessed to have six wonderful grandchildren: Anna Mott Breslin and her husband Zachary Breslin, Emily Mott, Kenneth and Tyler Banks, and Bethanie and Connor Banks. She is also survived by her sisters and brother: Gertrude Ryan, William Yates and Nancy Armour; brother-in-law, Stuart Henley and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours to celebrate her life will be held at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield, CT on Friday, December 20, from 5:00-8:00PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Shirley’s memory to: Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church, 1089 Fairfield Woods Road, Fairfield, CT. 06825.
