Ambrose Bradford Davis, Junior
August 16, 1915 - May 19, 2013
Ambrose (Jim) Davis was born August 16, 1915 in Tampa, Florida to Ambrose Bradford Davis, Sr. and Florence Risley Davis. Jim graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa in 1932. He attended Brewster Vocational School in Tampa from 1933-1934 where he studied shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping. Jim married Lillian Cordel Hall, July 26, 1941. The Sherwin Williams Company in Tampa employed Jim for eight and a half years prior to being drafted in the Army. Jim was a combat infantryman in Company A 109th Infantry Regiment where he fought in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He earned the EAME Theater Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star Medal. Jim achieved these medals for heroic achievement on 2 and 3 of February, in connection with military operations against the enemy in France. Jim was a squad leader in a rifle company of the 28th Infantry Division in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. He was hit with shrapnel and sent to a hospital in England for recovery and was to be sent home. He refused and went back to his squadron. After participating in five major campaigns, Jim was recommended to be a commissioned officer just prior to the cessation of hostilities. He was honorably discharged October of 1945. He lived with shrapnel in his back for the remainder of his life.
After his discharge from the Army in 1945, he moved to California where he was employed as an agricultural representative in Southern California and later in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1947, his first son, Dana was born. And in 1951, his other son, Craig was born. Both of his sons worked in the businesses with their father for many years. For 32 years, Jim owned and operated businesses in Modesto, Salida, and Escalon, supplying chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides to area farmers. Jim and his sons also farmed peaches, walnuts, grapes, and boyenberries. Jim retired in 1985 selling his businesses and properties in California. Jim was a avid golfeer and was a member of the Del Rio Country Club, a charter member of the Oakdale Country Club, and upon retirement, he joined the Spring Creek Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors until he moved to Florida in 1994. Jim lived there until his final move back to Modesto, May 2006, where he enjoyed his retirement and family until his passing.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Robert and Jerome, his sister, Doris, and his ex-wife, Lillian. Jim is survived by his son, Dana (Valerie) Davis of Escalon, California and Craig Davis, of Riggins, Idaho. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters-in-law. He was a good father and will be missed by his family and friends.
We are grateful for the care and kindess given to Jim by the Bethel Assisted Living & Hospice Staff.

My Dad, Joe Nuccio owned a peach ranch on Coffee Road in Modesto. Jim supplied all of his fertilizers, chemicals, etc. needs for the ranch. I didn't realize that Jim was born in Tampa, Florida that was something else they had in common. I remember he'd come to the ranch and that he and Dad would visit. It was a Modesto of a different time-a time when customers were valued and a rapport was initiated. My Dad totally enjoyed Jim stopping by and had the greatest respect and admiration for Jim and his company.
What a fulfilling, admirable life he led. He truly was one of the Greatest Generation.
My sincere sympathy to you, his family.
