Babcock, Gerald - Palm Desert
Gerald Rakel Babcock February 21, 1931 - April 26, 2016 Gerald Rakel Babcock (Jerry), age 85, died on April 26, 2016 in Palm Desert, CA surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born in Gladstone, Oregon, the son of Gerald A. Babcock and Velma Rakel Babcock. He attended grade schools in Oregon City and Portland, Oregon. In January 1949, he graduated from Washington High School in Portland. While in high school Jerry lettered in both varsity track and football. He was a drummer for the Washington High marching band and club member of HI-Y and EUK. Jerry loved the big bands of the era and was a great dancer.  He met his future wife, Phyllis, in his junior year and they were high school "steadies". Phyllis was from Grant High and they both loved to dance. Jerry received a sports scholarship in football & track from Lewis and Clark College in Portland. While at Lewis & Clark, Jerry joined the Air National Guard reserves in December of 1950 during the Korean War and his unit was activated into the U.S. Air Force in May 1951. He served for one year as a radar technician in Alaska on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. Considered hardship duty, his enlistment was reduced from 3 to 2 years. Upon his return from Alaska, Jerry and Phyllis were married in June of 1952 and he served out his remaining year at an isolated coastal radar site near Point Arena, CA. Jerry completed a business & engineering technology degree at Portland State University in 1959. While in school Jerry and Phyllis had two daughters Pamela and Debra, and son Jeffrey. Their 4th child, Lisa, completed their family a few years later. Jerry had a 10 year career with American Can Company in both Portland and Seattle as a Customer Service Engineer. During those years, Jerry and Phyllis were co-founders and Presidents' Carousel Dance Club in Portland and later Vagabond Dance Club in Bellevue, Washington.   In 1967, Jerry accepted a position as Plant Engineer with Norpac Foods in Salem, OR. Jerry and his family enjoyed being a part of the Salem Swim and Tennis Club. Jerry left the Northwest in 1972 after being recruited by Westgate-California Foods, a tuna canning operation in San Diego, CA. He accepted an engineering position which was an exciting challenge in an entirely new industry and state. He loved San Diego and it's harbor and took up sailing. His sailboat became the love of his life while sailing on Lake Don Pedro. Jerry relocated to Modesto, CA in 1975 to become Manager of Engineering for Tri-Valley Growers for 10 years and later for Patterson Frozen Foods where he retired after 16 years. Jerry's career accomplishments included being a Certified Plant Engineer (CPE); president and charter member of the Modesto Plant Engineers Club; chairman of the State Energy Resources Committee for the California League of Food Processors from 1987-1997. He was president of the Manufacturers Council of the Central Valley and following his retirement was asked to serve as interim CEO of the council in 1999. He was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE). For the past 18 years Jerry and Phyllis spent their winters in Palm Desert, CA. A highlight of their retirement was their condo at Deep Canyon Tennis Club (DCTC) where they enjoyed tennis and made many treasured friends. For over 30 years, the entire family gathered for the Christmas holidays at Lake Tahoe which was a special family tradition. Jerry is survived by his wife Phyllis, his four children Pamela Hunsaker (John), Debra Newbrough (John), Jeffrey Babcock (Vicky) and Lisa Babcock, his seven grandchildren Aaron Hunsaker, Alissa Hunsaker, Laura Newbrough, Karina Newbrough, Evan Newbrough (Shawn), Phillip Babcock, Rebecca Babcock Brogan (Aaron) and great-granddaughter Ryann Newbrough. Jerry was the most loving of husbands, a wonderful father, both a caring grandfather and great grandfather and a genuine friend to many. He was dearly loved. Jerry and Phyllis would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2016. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Oregon City, OR. www.cvobituaries.com
