Lester, Flora - Los Banos
Flora Lester November 25, 1924 - April 29, 2015 Flora Lester, a lifetime resident of Los Banos, died peacefully in her home of 63 years, on April 29, 2015, at the age of 90. Mrs. Lester was born November 25, 1924, in a barn on a dairy in the Badger Flat area. She attended Los Banos Schools and graduated from Westside Union High School. In 1944, a young sailor from West Virginia stopped in Los Banos to have a beer and spied a carload of young women. That sailor, John Lester, picked the "prettiest girl in the car." Such began a 71-year love affair. They were married at the Merced County Courthouse on August 21, 1946. While John served in the US Navy, the couple lived in Vallejo, San Francisco, Long Beach, Bloomington, National City and San Diego while his ship was in port. Flora, a first generation Italian American, returned to Los Banos to be with her family, while John was at sea. When John was discharged in June of 1952, they made Los Banos their permanent home. Throughout her life, Flora loved to garden, fish, camp, gamble and travel. But above all else, she loved a house full of her children and grandchildren and their friends. Everyone was welcome in her home, and they all had to eat. Her greatest joy was the love of her family. Flora was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Maria Buffuna; her siblings, Theresa Buffuna, Jeanette Alberti, Rose Thomas and Tony Buffuna. She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, John Lester; her five children and their spouses, Pat and John Mize, Janice "Jan" and the late Rick Becker, Lora Brazil, Karen and Jesse Gamino, and Bruce Lester. In addition, Flora had 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Whitehurst Funeral Home in Los Banos on Monday, May 4. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m., and the memorial service will begin at noon.  A reception will follow.  The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Amy Wiley, Laura Maciel, Norma Contreras, Hinds Hospice and Dr. Juan Vergara for the compassionate care they provided our wife, mother and grandmother. www.cvobituaries.com

Ottoboni, Roy - Modesto
Roy Allan Ottoboni March 8, 1927 - April 23, 2015 Roy Allan Ottoboni was born on March 8, 1927 in San Juan Bautista, CA and passed away on April 23, 2015.  Roy was predeceased by his wife Lorraine, his parents Lawrence and Margaret (Barbee) Ottoboni, his brothers Larry, Robert and Clarence and his son Mark,  and is survived by his sisters Jeannette and Florence of San Juan, his son Jeff of Windsor, his grandson Ryan of San Ramon and his granddaughter Caroline of Eugene, OR among a larger extended family.  As Roy would say, he rejected the rocking chair when he retired after 41 years in education, all with the Modesto City Schools.  Instead he became a full-time volunteer with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, a role that became virtually a second career lasting almost twenty years.   A graduate of St. Mary's College in Moraga, Roy also obtained a Master's Degree from Stanford University.   Roy's first teaching assignment was in Modesto.  It was also his last.  When he retired in 1992, he had served in a variety of classroom and administrative roles in four Modesto high schools.   He began teaching in 1951 at Modesto High School as an English teacher where he met his wife Lorraine, also a teacher, a union which lasted for over 50 years until Lorraine's passing in 2010.  His next assignment was at Thomas Downey High School where he was chairman of the English Department for seven years.  Later, he was Supervisor of Instruction and Assistant Principal at Grace Davis High School.  His final years in education were spent at Elliott Education Center.   Roy was active in church affairs for many years.  He co-chaired the funds drive to launch St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Oakdale Road, serving several terms on the Parish Council and served as Chairman of the Lectors Ministry for over thirty years.  He was also President of the Parents Group at Central Catholic High School which both of his sons attended.   A very proud chapter in Roy's later years came as a volunteer in the Sheriff's Department where he served actively in the STARS program, a role for which he was named volunteer of the year in 1996.  The following year he was awarded the Department's Medal of Merit.  Roy was extremely proud to be named an honorary member of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Posse, and his many affiliations included membership in the Stanislaus County Peace Officers Association.  His total contribution of volunteer time to the Sheriff's Department approached  40,000 hours.  Roy's family wished to extend a special thank you to the staff at Dale Commons in Modesto for caring for him with great respect and love for the last three years of his life.    Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Road in Modesto with a reception at O'Hare Hall at St. Jospeh's.  The reception will follow the burial at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Avenue in Hughson. A visitation  is planned for Sunday, May 10th from 4:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 6:00p.m. at Franklin & Downs McHenry Chapel located at 1050 McHenry Avenue in Modesto.      In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any donation be made to the Stanislaus County Peace Officers' Association, the Peace Officer Memorial Group, Inc. (also in Stanislaus County) or to other law enforcement organizations. Franklin and Downs Funeral Home are honored to be serving the Ottoboni family.
