Joyce Taylor McCown passed away peacefully on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the age of 75, at her home in Modesto, California. She was born on November 29, 1937, to the late C. Edwin and Jacqueline Taylor, in Stockton, California, and grew up in San Andreas, California, where she was valedictorian of her Calaveras High School Class of 1955.
Joyce attended UC Berkeley and met her spouse, Gary, in pharmacy school at UC San Francisco. They were married on December 21, 1958. Joyce was one of the first female graduates of the UCSF pharmacy program in 1960 and went on to get her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of the Pacific in 1976. She and Gary moved to Modesto in 1963 where they owned and worked their own pharmacies. In her 40-year career, she also worked part-time at other local pharmacies and hospitals and taught nurses in-service training at City Hospital.

She was a past-President of Omega Nu, a philanthropic women's association, a docent at McHenry Mansion, and was active in the Enslen Elementary PTA and the Davis High Booster Club. She enjoyed her regular tennis foursome at the Racquet Club, her monthly Book Club group, and the many weekends spent with friends and family at her cottage in Monterey. She also loved to travel and explore other cultures including Egypt, China, Kenya, Tanzania, and most of Western Europe.
