M. Ray Putler
February 22, 1928 - July 3, 2013
The family of Ray Putler is sad to announce that Ray passed away on July 3, 2013 after six months of declining health. He was 85 years of age at the time of his death.
Ray was an extremely affable guy, with a ready smile. He easily made friends, was well liked by a great many people in the community, and will be greatly missed. Ray was a devoted husband and father to his two sons. He was regarded as a "straight-shooter" in his dealings with others.
He was born in Merced, but grew up in the Sierra foothills southwest of Yosemite National Park. He graduated from Sierra High School in Tollhause and then entered Fresno State College at the age of 17, but withdrew after his freshman year to join the US Navy
near the end of World War Two. He served as a weatherman, stationed on a number of Pacific islands, in the immediate post-war period. Ray re-entered Fresno State after leaving the Navy in 1948, where he studied biology, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and met his future wife, Carol Klink. After graduating from Fresno State, he spent a few years as a lumber salesman (he worked a number of different jobs in the lumber industry in his teens and twenties). In 1953, he married Carol, five days after her graduation from Fresno State, and, a year later, made a major career shift by entering the Dental School at USC. After graduating from dental school in 1958, he set up a dental practice in Fresno, but relocated to his wife Carol's hometown, Modesto, in 1965. He lived there for the rest of his life. After retiring from dentistry in 1994, he traveled extensively with Carol in the US, Canada, and Europe, and continued to engage in many of the hobbies he enjoyed prior to retirement.
Ray was an avid tennis player, outdoorsman, gardener, wine affectionado, and a lover of Brittany Spaniels. He was a member of the Modesto Racquet Club, the Modesto Sunrise Rotary, and the Dental Societies of Stanislaus and Fresno counties.
Ray is survived by his wife Carol Putler of Modesto, his brother James Putler of Fremont, his older son Dan Putler of Sunnyvale, his younger son Tom Putler of Stockton, his grandchildren Rosemary Putler (of Madison, WI) and Eric Putler (of Sunnyvale), and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He is predeceased by his brothers Owen and William, both of whom resided in Fresno.
A celebration of Ray's life will be held at the Fleur de Lis Reception Hall (3460 Oakdale Road, Modesto, CA 95355, facing Sylvan Avenue) on Sunday, July 28 at 3pm. The family would like to thank the staff at Valley Comfort and Community Hospice for the care that they gave Ray. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Community Hospice Foundation in Ray's name at 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356, or http://www.hospiceheart.org/foundation
, or to another charity of the giver's choice. www.cvobituaries.com
