Wilma Dustin Obituary

Wilma W. Dustin
October 15, 1922 - December 6, 2013
Wilma "Willie" Dustin was born in Portland, Oregon to Virgil and Lois Waggoner. She was an active and athletic young lady riding her bicycle, hiking and swimming in the frigid local streams and even the Pacific Ocean.
Willie was a Home Economics major at Oregon State College (now University). It was at Oregon State that she met the love of her life and future husband, Dale "Dusty" Dustin. They married in August of 1943 and Patty, their only child, was born in October 1944. Dusty served in WWII and during the Korean conflict. When Dusty went back to work for General Mills they lived in Lodi and Tustin. They moved to Oakdale when Dale became plant manager of Hunts. Willie has called Oakdale home for 50 years.
Long before the emphasis on healthy eating Willie prepared delicious meals with healthy eating in mind. In their Oakdale home, one could sit at a bar overlooking the kitchen and watch Willie work her magic and have a cocktail. Willie always had a project or two going, thus she told Dusty "she married him for better or worse, but not for lunch."
Her projects were many and varied, sewing, spinning, weaving, knitting, and even tatting and of course the crossword puzzle. She spun yarn, even using Samoyed hair, then she wove that yarn and used the material to make many things, even clothing. Willie belonged to the The Weavers Guild and Re-Weavers for many years. She sewed most of her own outfits. She knitted many sweaters for herself and family. Willie also hand quilted a tablecloth, including seat cushions.Another love was making teddy bears. Many of the bears had names like Honey Bear and Waldo. They came in sizes from 3 inches to a foot or so tall. Some looked like curly bears, others were like velvet.Willie loved to tend her garden, growing vegetables, herbs and lots of flowers. Her Home was always a welcome haven for friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Patty Lorang and grandchildren Mike and Laura Lorang and great grandchild Madysen Lorang. Her husband, Dale, passed away in 1991.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, December 17 at House of Beef Banquet Room, 227 N. 1st Ave at 11am.
Memorial donations in her name can be made to either Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto 95356, or the Oakdale Library, 151 South 1st Ave, Oakdale 95361.

Willie was a very special lady. She treated me like family and welcomed me into her home. I have mug rugs woven by her that I still use. She will be missed by all who knew her. My condolences to her family.
