Fred Hanson Obituary

FRED WARREN HANSON JUL 24, 1911 - OCT 28, 2010 Fred Warren Hanson, of Swedish heritage, was born 24July 1911 in Lyman County, SD. He was the eighth of eleven children born to John H. and Ida W. Hanson. He had one adopted brother. He is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. Fred proudly served in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man in South Dakota. After moving to California with a great desire to serve his country, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he specialized in communications as a radioman. He fortunately escaped damage while aboard the USS Chandler at the mouth of Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack during WWII. Fred was aboard the USS Hendry during the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa as well as doing direction finder duty in the South Pacific before his honorable discharge in 1946. Fred retired from Pacific Bell in 1976 with over 30 yrs of service. He was a member of Calvary Reformed Church in Ripon. Fred is the 'last leaf on the tree' as the last of 12 children. He is survived by nieces and nephews; Paul, Larry, Rolf and Bruce Hanson, Albert Larson, John Rushford, Catherine Alexander, June Travaille, Gean Landy, Jacqueline Maude, Annie Stanton, Ruby Hanson, Gerald Pepper and numerous great nieces and nephews as well as his caregiver great niece Penny Travaille. Both of his wives, Laura and Mildred preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Thursday, November 4th at Franklin & Downs-McHenry Chapel, Modesto. Private burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, CA www.modbee.com/obituaries
