James Shively Obituary

JAMES LOWELL SHIVELY, SR. AUG 12 1931 - SEPT 27 2010 James Lowell Shively Sr. was known as Jim, but it was his pleasantries, patience and popularity that led many to better know him as ' Gentleman Jim' He passed away on Monday, September 27, 2010, at Sonora Medical Center after bravely managing a chronic heart condition. As a long time Modesto school administrator, students, parents and staff relied on Jim's consistency and professionalism to get the job done. Prescott Jr. High School's 1986 yearbook dedication to their Principal Jim, recognized his giving and nurturing nature. His humble North Dakota and Montana upbringing kept Jim working hard for the Stanislaus School System. During this time he raised two wonderful sons, James Jr. and Steven. He and his wife, Lenore (Cislo) enjoyed family activities with their sons regularly exploring Yosemite, wandering weekend trips in a long line of old Volkswagens which made for great times and better memories. Upon his retirement he and Lenore moved to Sonora where he enjoyed his two horses we rescued and raising racing pigeons. Jim was the third of four children born to Jeanette and Owen Shively on August12, 1931, in Underwood, North Dakota. Before studying at Montana State College and Western Montana, Jim served on the USS Chara during the Korean War . He was a member of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), the Mother Lode Division #87 Cal RTA and the American Legion . In addition to his loving wife and cherished sons, Jim is survived by daughters-in-laws Kelly (JimJr.), Marnie (Steve), grandchildren Megan Blair and Greer, Hudson, Madison, and Colton Shively along with great-grand daughter Keeley Blair. Siblings David Shively, Joyce Maynard , Dan Shively and their loving families also survive Jim. Jim has found safe harbor. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rehorse Rescue Ranch, P.O. Box 494, Jamestown, CA 95327 or www.modbee.com/obituaries www.rehorserescue.org

Lenore,
My deepest condolescences to you and your family. Jim was a dear friend. I know you miss him greatly. Jim was such a "gentle" man. First as a vice-
principal and then as THE principal of Prescott Senior Elementary I appreciated Jim's leadership skills and his problem-solving abilities with our diverse staff. His quiet, calm manner defused many "sticky" situations. In my role as vice principal at Prescott Jim was my mentor, sharing his experience and helping to mold my career with valuable tidbits one can only learn on the job. He was a wonderful man and a great educator. God's richest blessings on you and your family.
