Janet McGiffin Obituary

JANET J. MCGIFFIN MAR 18, 1926 - DEC 21, 2010 Our loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother Janet McGiffin, left this world for her eternal home in Heaven. Janet was born in Toledo, Ohio to George and Naomi Gipe. In 1943, she married the love of her life, Robert McGiffin. In 1957, the family moved from Toledo to California and had several business ventures, including an egg ranch in Chino and a Schwinn bicycle shop in Santa Paula. The family moved to Conroe, Texas in 1969 and in 1973 moved to Modesto and purchased Bressler's Ice Cream shop. Later, retirement saw Rob and Janet traveling the Western US and wintering in Yuma, AZ for 20 years, where they enjoyed golfing, bowling and dancing. Janet loved to garden, bowl, golf, paint, and was always the first to volunteer when a family member needed help doing something. Up until the time of her illness, she bowled on 2 leagues at McHenry Bowl. Her high scores were often listed in the Modesto Beeon Wednesdays. She also played bridge at the Senior Center and privately with a group of friends. She learned to paint in Yuma and completed many beautiful paintings, until she ran out of wall space. She excelled in everything she touched. When asked of her greatest accomplishment she replied, ''her family.'' Janet is survived by her son and his wife: Mike and Kit McGiffin of Austin, TX; daughters and their husbands: Marcia and Mark Vanlerberghe, Sandra and Dan Fitzgerald, Karen and George Blanco, Joyce and Doug Gee, all of Modesto; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with another due in February; and her brother George Gipe of Toledo, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, her grandson, John Hoffmeyer and her parents. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 3rd at Calvary Lutheran Church, 547 Rose Avenue, Modesto. In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial donation to: Alexander Cohen Hospice House, 2201 Euclid Avenue, Hughson, CA 95326 www.modbee.com/obituaries
