John attended Riverbank schools where he met Vera Day. They fell in love and married in 1937 before moving to Venice, California where John worked as a draftsman for Douglas Aircraft in the production of planes for the war effort. Two daughters were born to John and Vera, Fay Dunbar and Pat Jackson. Following the war, the family returned to Modesto where John was warehouse manager and chief machinist at area canneries. He is remembered by his three granddaughters: Gretchen Van Male (Bow, Washington), Stacy Dunbar (El Cerrito, California) and Lisa Goerlich (Sacramento, California). John is predeceased by his wife, Vera, his brothers Harold and Elmer Winger and his three sisters Edith Corson, Helen Welch and Ruth Gospe. John is also predeceased by his second wife, Mary Andrade Winger. John was a 60 year member of Riverbank Masonic Lodge #459.
