John Arthur Martin
April 20, 1922-March 9, 2014
John Arthur Martin passed away on March 9, 2014 in Modesto at the age of 91.  John was born on April 20, 1922 to John and Sarah Martin in Fresno, California.  John has been a resident of the Modesto area for the past 62 years. 
After high school John joined the US Navy where he served in World War II.  After leaving the service John worked as an Optician for 60 years.  John was an active member in his community; in 1954 John started Martin Optical Service, built it to be one of the largest Optical Laboratories in the state of California.  He is a former member of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Board, past president of the Lions Club as well as the Del Rio Country Club and of the Better Vision Institute.  He was a member and also past president of the Calif. Optical Labs Assn. and on the board of the National Optical Labs Assn.  John was on the board for the Red Cross and Modesto Rotary Club.  John was also active with the Modesto Elks Lodge 1282.  He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, husband and friend and will be truly missed.
John leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Maxine Martin, his children: Ken Martin (Colleen), Stephen Martin (Barbara), Jill Broumas (Harry) and Jim Boren, his grandchildren: Stephen, John, Rebecca, Kimberly, Lesley, Stan, Eric, Jeff, Joel and Jennifer along with 18 great grandchildren.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Franklin & Downs Funeral Home.  A chapel service is scheduled for Friday, March 14 at 11:00 AM at Franklin & Downs McHenry Chapel, with graveside services to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson.  Donations in John's name may be made to Community Hospice, Rotary Foundation or the Modesto Elks Lodge.
