I want to extend my sympathies to you as the Nelson family. I always enjoyed Mr Nelsons' enthusiasm, while watching the Crossroads Church tapes at the Blancs'. I could tell he was a wonderful person. I never met him but wish I could have. I know you will miss him greatly.

This was my favorite place to be from 1969 to 1973; choir class or anything to do with singing--every school play for example. Working with Mr. Nelson, trying his patience as young athletes were being shaped to appreciate music, understand the composer's intent, and put it all together with the always more talented young ladies--I'll never forget.
I have sung a song every day on the way to work now for almost 38 years; my kids hope it's one they've heard before so they can join in...
I think of this caring teacher who knew full well that our success was tied to his success and blended so many personalities together to produce an outstanding experience for both novice and more talented singers and musicians. He did it with such ease and intent that we forgot about many of the more visible changes in our world around us during our period with him.
Never forgotten and I'm only sad that I wasn't able to sing with my classmates at the event held a few years ago in his honor. I'm honored that he felt patient enough to put up with me and my classmates for 4 consecutive years.
I would have never internalized Frost's Road Not taken which has turned into a compass for my life--had John not given me the music to feel the sentiments of this poem.
Know Mr. Nelson, that you've deeply touched many of us as you journey to join a flock you guided--with your actions, while here on earth.
Sincerely,
Chuck Moore, LHS '73

Such a wonderful man. I still remember how kind he was when I went to school at TC. Through the years his kindness and smile did not change. Mrs. Nelson, Colleen, Bryan and the entire family I am praying for you.

As a freshman in high school (at Pitman) I was nervous to join choir, but very excited. Mr. Nelson opened his arms to me and lead me into the choir with a warm heart. Over the few years I knew Mr. Nelson he became more than my choir director, he became like a grandfather to me. I loved going to choir every day. As my respect and admiration grew for Mr. Nelson so did my passion for choir. Mr. Nelson is the reason I stayed in choir throughout my high school years and the reason I worked so hard to improve. He had the most contagious laugh and the biggest heart I have ever seen. With so much love to give he has so much love given in return.

John's love and enthusiasm for God and music have made him a welcome addition to Heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
