Philip Z. "Phil" Rutschow, Jr.
February 4, 1943 - April 3, 2014
Philip Z. "Phil" Rutschow, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on April 3. Phil was born on Feb. 4, 1943 in Biloxi, Miss. and grew up in West Virginia. He attended Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, Calif. and graduated from Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. in 1965 before settling in Modesto.
Phil worked for Granite Construction Co. for 12 years and Teichert Construction Co. for 29 years. He finished his long construction career working 1-1/2 years at WC Maloney, Inc.
An active member of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club for 41 years, he enjoyed working on the group's annual American Graffiti Festival car show every June. Phil also enjoyed cooking for the CCHS booster club at Central Catholic High School football games.
Phil is survived by his wife of almost 46 years, Joan; daughters, Heidi Rutschow and Amy Rutschow; sister, Martha Smith (Ken); niece, Michelle Yung (Troy); nephew K.P. Smith (Chuck); and sisters-in-law, Cathy Fallow (Wain) and Susen Stefanko (Steve).
Phil was devoted to his friends, family and colleagues. He loved to cook and entertain, and was an avid fly fisherman, golfer, and duck hunter. Phil and Joan also loved concerts at Graceda Park every summer. Phil was devoted to his daughters and fondly remembered summer camping trips, softball games and fishing trips. Phil loved to travel and was very proud of having visited all 50 states in his lifetime.
The family would like to thank Optimal Hospice Care for their incredible support and service during Phil's illness.
Arrangements are entrusted to Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, McHenry Chapel, Modesto. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11 a.m., followed by graveside service at Lakewood Memorial Park at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a
