March 5, 1933 - August 22, 2014
Ann (Macdonald) Hoag went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, August 22, 2014, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her family and entered peacefully into her Savior's arms.
Ann was born in Kearney, New Jersey on March 5, 1933 to Finlay and Selina Macdonald. As a child, Ann enjoyed being outdoors, swimming, playing "kick the can", climbing trees, playing in the snow, and playing hide and go seek until dark. Ann graduated from the State University of New York in 1954, and began her teaching career, which lasted more than 30 years. Ann married Charles Hoag in Oneonta, New York on August 20, 1955. They had three children, Jay, Jill, and Jett, all born in New York, before moving across the United States to California in 1960. The family moved many times within California, living in Orcutt, Santa Maria, Oakley, Antioch, and Gustine before settling in Ripon in 1969. Ann began teaching at Ripona School in 1969 and retired in 1993. She often referred to her retirement as her permanent recess.
Ann loved retirement, but she did not slow down. She never wanted to stop learning and enjoying life. She busied herself with Bible Study, crossword puzzles and Sudoku. She loved getting together with her friends to walk in the morning, and loved having coffee with them at Burgess Bakery, The Donut Shop, McDonalds and Franks Place. She enjoyed playing tennis for the Central Valley Tennis League. She was also generous with her time as a public servant, being a Docent for the McHenry Mansion, helping with Interfaith Ministries, leading Bible studies, and serving on the San Joaquin Civil Grand Jury and the Youth Accountability Board.
She loved traveling the world. She and Chuck enjoyed taking many trips to Hawaii, and were able to explore Israel together. She also loved taking girl's trips with her daughter. Together they journeyed through Scotland, Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland, and France, and vacationed in Hawaii many times.
Ann leaves behind a family who will miss her encouraging words, love for life, positive attitude in all circumstances, and strong faith in the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her son, J.C. Hoag. She is survived by her husband Chuck, her brother Don Macdonald, and his wife Betty Jo, who reside in Florida; her son J.C.'s wife, Becky Hoag, her daughter Jill (Bud) Schemper, and her son Jett (Lisa) Hoag. She had many grandchildren, including Mac Hoag, Neil (Markail) Hoag, Danny (Lauren) Hoag, and Casey Hoag, Amy (Eric) Parsons, Brad (Nicole) Schemper, and Laura Schemper, Ricky Hoag, Katie (Aaron) Heether, and Jody Hoag. Great-grandchildren include Matthew, Nathan, and Logan Parsons, Noah and Olivia Schemper, Teagan and Kiptyn Heether, and Deklan Hoag.
