Kevin Garcia Obituary

Published by Modesto Bee on May 14, 2017.
Kevin Garcia
June 22, 1975 -May 3, 2017
Kevin passed away unexpectedly from the effects of a massive stroke on May 3rd, 2017 at Doctors Medical Center surrounded by those dearest to him.  Kevin Michael Garcia was born in San Jose, California June 22, 1975 and raised in Modesto since the Age of 3. He graduated from Downey High School in 1993.
The sting of this loss is felt deeply within his friends and family, the community and across the world as he was internationally known as the bassist for the band Grandaddy, which was formed here in Modesto in 1992.
If his friends were asked to describe him in one word they would say he was "solid." He was always the first to selflessly offer help without the expectation of anything in return. He was a genuine person with a humble and subtle charisma that made you feel at ease. He was a true exemplar of what it means to be a loyal friend. Kevin was a natural teacher, a mentor, and a very nurturing person who was always ready with wise words or support and encouragement.
Kevin's home in downtown Modesto was the epicenter of many gatherings. He loved to feed his friends. He was an excellent chef and a master on the grill. He had a loving way of bringing everyone together to sit and listen to music among the tomato plants, strawberries and nasturtiums in his beautiful back yard that he built himself. He made his home a welcoming place, set up with musical instruments, a pool table and endless beer on tap. He was the perfect host. Besides being an amazing chef and a brilliant musician, he was also a rad skateboarder and in the 90's could be found working or hanging out at local skate shops. His talent came so naturally and without obvious effort just like his approach to life, and in his ability to remain intact and calm in stressful situations. He had a gift for not letting the petty things get to him
Kevin leaves behind his beautiful wife, Sondra and his two children, Jayden (8) and Gavin (4). He was a tender and loving father and a dedicated husband. He adored his family. He spoke of them fondly and was quick to share pictures when they came up in conversation. His proud parents Randy and Barbara Garcia, his grandmother Joan Arthur, and his mother in law, Shirley reside in Modesto. He leaves behind brothers Craig, Jeff and Ron. His brother Randy Jr. passed away in 2013.
Kevin was known for his unparalleled kindness, his many talents, and his generous spirit.  He lived a fast and fruitful life and will forever be remembered for his luminous smile and a distinct laugh that was all his own. He inspired many with the qualities that made him approachable and down to earth. Whether you knew him as Kevin, K-Gar, The Woof, K.G. or Kevvy, he will be missed…
Kevin Garcia...This world did love you.
Private services will be held nearby for close friends and family on May the 15th.  A more public celebration of Kevin's life will be on the 20th of May with a time and place to be announced. A Go Fund Me account has been set up for help with expenses accrued in handling memorial services and to ensure security for his Wife and Children. https://www.gofundme.com/friends-of-kevin-garcia

To the family,
I send you my deepest condolences.

The swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle, nor do the wise always have the food, nor do the intelligent always have the riches, nor do those with knowledge always have success, because time and unexpected events overtake them all.Ecclesiastes 9:11
