Joseph Earl "Joe" Squires
August 8, 1924 - June 20, 2013
Joe was born in Preston County, West Virginia to Clyde & Tillie Squires. He was raised in Arthurdale, West Virginia - a community that Eleanor Roosevelt helped create to address the impoverishment of unemployed coal miners and their families during the Depression. When Joe graduated from Arthurdale High School in 1943, Mrs. Roosevelt awarded him his diploma. Joe served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was stationed in San Francisco, where he met his "lovely first wife", Beverly Lucas, before serving aboard the USS Intrepid in the Pacific. He was aboard the Intrepid when it came under a devastating kamikaze attack in Nov. 1944.
Joe married Bev on October 27, 1946 in San Francisco. They were married 40 years until Bev's death in 1987. Joe and Bev had two children, Jeffrey & Susan. The family lived in Candlestick Cove in San Francisco, South San Francisco & Millbrae. Joe was an involved father, dedicated, caring and always supportive of his children's interests. He and Bev created a safe, supportive and nurturing home filled with unconditional love. He was a devoted grandfather, always ready to play, to listen, to comfort. Most of all, Joe was a true Man of God, always living his faith through his acts of kindness, generosity, compassion and forgiveness. After Bev's death Joe relocated to Modesto. He married Lois Jacobs-Moore in 1988 and embraced her family as his own.
Joe is survived by his children, Sue Squires of Modesto and Jeff Squires of Ft. Collins, CO; his grandchildren Scott & Josh (Samantha) Smith of Modesto, Amanda Smith of San Diego, Sebastian & Genevieve Squires of Colorado; great-grandchildren Alli. Noah, Brianna, Lydia, Jillian & Ben Smith; his brother Ralph Squires of Virginia, his second wife, Lois, her son, her 5 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren.
