April 4, 1929 - July 6, 2013
Patricia Herman left this earth on Saturday, July 6, and ascended into the loving arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Pat was born April 4, 1929, the second child of Ralph and Marjorie Roby, in Marion, Ohio. She attended school there, and after graduating from high school, attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While attending Capital University, she met Ralph Herman, a student from Sacramento, CA. A romance followed, and after their graduation, they were married in August, 1951.
Pat started her teaching career while her husband, Ralph, attended what is now Trinity Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus. A one year internship followed in Torrance, CA, and Pat taught first grade while there. At the conclusion of the internship, they returned to Columbus for one more year of seminary. In 1955, Ralph was ordained as a Lutheran minister, and they accepted a call to serve churches in both Fallon and Marsh, Montana. Pat, though not intending to resume teaching at this time, was quickly recruited to teach all eight grades in a very old one-room schoolhouse in the tiny town of Marsh, where the heat was from a woodburning stove, and water had to be carried in by bucket. However, Pat's teaching was soon interrupted by the birth of their first son, Mark.
After two years in Montana, Ralph received a call from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bakersfield, CA. With an infant to care for, Pat decided that substitute teaching would work better for her; and while in Bakersfield, their second son, Brooks, was born.
In 1962, Ralph and Pat accepted a call to Calvary Lutheran Church in Modesto and served this church for thirty years. Upon his retirement from there in 1992, they began a part-time ministry at Mountain Lutheran Church in Groveland, CA, which continued until just recently.
Pat resumed teaching in Modesto; first substituting, and then teaching first grade full time at El Vista Elementary School until her retirement in 1991. However, the love of teaching and of the children she taught, kept her substituting until she reached the age of seventy, when she retired for the last time.
Upon retirement, Pat volunteered as a docent for the Great Valley Museum, was a member of the Stanislaus Retired Teachers Association, and helped to form a luncheon group of retirees from El Vista School, which continues to meet on a regular basis.
Pat is survived by the Reverend Ralph Herman and son, Mark Herman, both of Modesto; son, Brooks (Trish) Herman; and grandson, Matthew, of Chico; sister, Donna (Earl) Key, of Marion, Ohio; and two nieces.
A memorial service will be held an Saturday, July 20th, at 11 A.M, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 547 Rose Avenue, Modesto. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Calvary Lutheran Church, 547 Rose Ave., Modesto, 95355 or Mountain Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 995, Groveland, CA. 95321, or the
