Chester " Skip " Lee McKune
December 29, 1943 - July 15, 2013
On July 15, Chester "Skip" McKune passed away from leukemia. He passed away on his terms, surrounded by his family who loved him very much. Skip fought his cancer with courage, strength and grace.
Skip was born in The Dalles, Oregon, to Chester and Eva McKune. He happily spent his first 18 years in Goldendale, Washington. He always said that growing up in Goldendale was like "Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show."
He graduated in 1962 from Goldendale High School and enlisted in the Air Force to see the world. He spent most of his four-year career at Castle Air Force base in Merced, California.
After leaving the Air Force he attended Modesto Jr. College and in 1969 received his associate degree in Police Science. On July 16, 1969, he went to work for the Modesto Police Department. During his 30-year career he was a patrol officer, worked Vice and Narcotics, was in charge of a special investigation unit and Lieutenant Supervisor for the Detective and Patrol Division.
He retired from the Modesto Police Department in 1999 and went to work for a short time for the Modesto Bankruptcy Court. In 2003, he took a position with the City of Modesto as a liaison for the District Attorney's office. He retired from this position in July 2012 to move to Portland, Oregon, to be closer to family and cooler weather.
Skip was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. He loved sports, especially his beloved Cleveland Indians. In addition to sports he loved photography and traveling with his wife, Monica.
Skip is survived by his wife, Monica, of Portland, Oregon; daughter Amy Eldred and grandson Dexter Eldred of Tampa, Florida; brothers, Jim McKune of West Linn and Ken McKune, of Goldendale, Washington; and sister Kathy McKune Crocker of Portland, Oregon.
Skip kept a quote by his desk for many years which read:
"There is still one adventure ahead of me that is the greatest experience of all - the only perfect happenstance in life, with no strings attached, no loose ends, absolute perfection. That is death.
I think of it as the perfect ending to a long, happy life."
He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Skip's life will be held at 11:30 AM, on Friday, August 23, at Modesto Elks Lodge, 645 Charity Way, Modesto, CA.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating at your local blood bank or at Be The Match.org, to fight blood cancers.
