Long time Modesto resident, Donald Eldon Hicks, 86 passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. Born August 28, 1927 in Gresham, Oregon to Clarence and Irene Hicks, moved to Modesto as a young child. Don attended Modesto City Schools and graduated from Modesto High School in 1944.
Don joined the Navy soon after high school and served in the Pacific Theater. After returning from Service, Don married Opal Conrad. Don and Opal were avid square dancers. Opal passed away in 1978. Don later remarried, Merlene Holden Reid and they were married for over 35 years.
Don worked for the City of Modesto water department as a meter reader and repairman. A job that he loved for over 35 years. Following his retirement, Don worked for area car dealerships as a driver.
Don was an active member of Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and choir member.
Don was an only child and was preceded in death by his mother and father and first wife Opal Conrad Hicks.
Don is survived by his wife, Merlene, son Kenny (Sandy) Hicks of the Bay Area, stepdaughters, Peggy Reid and Cathy (Manny) Martinez of Modesto, Charlene Reid of Chico and three grandchildren.
Viewing will be held, Tuesday, Sept 17th, from 4-8 pm. Services on Wednesday, Sept 18th , 10 am at Salas Bros. on Scenic Drive. Interment follows at Lakewood Memorial Park.
