ELLEN MARGARET HOULIHAN PEGG
Ellen Margaret Houlihan Pegg "Grandma Great", age 93, a 57-year resident of Needles, Calif. passed away at her home on Friday, February 21, 2014. She was the fourth of nine children born to parents Mike and Gertrude Houlihan in Blaise Township, Wessington Springs, S.D. on March 28, 1920.
Ellen attended a one room country school in Wessington Springs, S.D. She quit school to help her family on their farm. When She was 14 years old their house burned down. She was 20 when she moved to Worthington, Minn. to work at a hospital with the nuns. Later she moved to Omaha, Neb. In 1947 she went on a vacation with her youngest sister, Roseanna to Los Angeles, Calif. where she met Roger and married in 1948. In 1949 Lynn Ellen was born, she was number one of six children born to them. In 1957 Roger was transferred from Los Angeles, Calif. to Needles, Calif. as a welder for Southern California Gas Company. Ellen worked as a homemaker, a cashier at Needles schools cafeteria and Needles Point Liquor and Deli. All six of her children graduated from Needles High.
Ellen and her children have been members of St. Anns Catholic Church for the last 57 years. Ellen ironed all the altar linens for 53 years. She was a member of Associate Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Pegg; son, Kenneth Pegg; and son-in-law, John A. More.
Ellen is survived by her daughters, Lynn More and Sandi (George) De Leon; sons, Dennis (Mary) Pegg, Larry Pegg and Jimmy (Mary) Pegg; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchild, Adrian Godina; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ellen will be remembered as a kind, humble and holy mother of Needles, Calif.
A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic Church, 218 D Street, Needles, Calif. A Christian Burial will follow immediately. A luncheon and reception will be held after burial in Fr. Hanley Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Masses be said at St. Anns Catholic Church for loved ones.
