John Harvey Obituary

MONTEREY - John (Jack) Stuart Harvey was born to John Stuart and Catherine Harvey on September 30, 1955 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The family moved to Walton-on-Thames, England for 6 years and then returned to Hudson, Quebec where Jack graduated from Hudson High School in 1972.

Jack started his 28 years of employment with HSBC in 1978 and held several titles in a variety of branches throughout Canada and the States. On November 5, 1988, he married Rita Budinsky and had two children, Laura and Scott, who were his greatest pride and joy.

In 1993, Jack moved his family to Monterey and was happy to be away from the cold and snow. Jack's heart remained in Canada, especially after purchasing a cottage at Lake Simcoe where his 10 years of summer fun began. He loved boating, fishing and socializing with family and friends.

The family became greatly involved with the JDRF to help find a cure for diabetes, a cause very dear to his heart when his daughter Laura was diagnosed. Community work was a passion for Jack as was helping those less fortunate. He held board positions with the Salinas Chamber of Commerce and Rebuilding Together and was always available to help local churches.

Jack's intelligence, caring heart and kind demeanor affected everyone who crossed his path. He had a wide circle of friends and associates and will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Jack is survived by Rita Harvey; his children, Laura (Justin) Clark and Scott Harvey and his siblings, David Harvey, Patricia (Mike) Finnegan and Jane (James) Patterson. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews from Canada, Scotland, England and New Zealand.

A memorial service will be held at Salinas Valley Community Church on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 49 Stevenson St., Ste. 1200, San Francisco, CA. 94105.

I knew Jack from my stint at HSBC - he was a great support to me personally through some very tough times, and a man whose integrity, charisma, humour, and leadership were an inspiration to many. A very sad loss - the world is poorer place without him. My thoughts are with all those whose lives he touched.

Throughout our lives we have the opportunity to meet (and in my case work with) genuinely good, kind people - that would be Jack Harvey!! Jack was one of my 22 "bosses" at the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and an absolute joy to be around. My sincere sympathy to Jack's family on their huge loss.

We used to call each other on our own birthdays - that way, we'd never forget.
I'll miss him terribly.

I had the good fortune to work w/ Jack in the late 80's, early 90's @ Household. He was a funny, compassionate, extremely insightful boss from whom I learned a great deal. He was a great listener and always was able to keep whatever the crisis of the moment was in perspective, a lesson most of us take a long time to learn. He also got my wife & I our 1st dog, Josey, the best dog I've ever had! I'm a better human being for having known you, Jack. I still savor so many great memories from the brief time we worked together....

What an incredible caring man who really wanted to make a difference. I knew of Jack while I was working in Chicago for Household International in the early 90's. It wasn't until 2005 after moving to Monterey that my husband and I had a chance to personally meet Jack and Rita through a Shoreline Community Church outreach event. Every time I would see Jack at church we would talk about the good old days of working at Household! :) Household was a good company back then. Jack will certainly be missed. Our prayers go out to his family and close friends. May peace be with you all.

I first met Jack in 1982 when we worked together at HFC in Bridgewater NS.

Despite the geographic distance as we both moved around, Jack always made the effort to maintain the friendship.

And although Jack was always modest about his guitar playing abilities, he was actually a very creative song writer and musician.

I have always been proud of the fact that a set of five songs we co-wrote were recorded and went on to receive minor airplay and recognition in Atlantic Canada.
