Ernest Roy Marshall
May 25, 1921 ~ April 21, 2013
SALINAS, CA – Ernest (Ernie) Roy Marshall, beloved husband, father and grandfather died peacefully on April 21, 2013.
Ernie was an avid gardener who brought laughter, joy, jokes and stories wherever he went. He is survived by his children, Pamela Marshall of Mitchell, IN; Lindasue Marshall of Aromas, CA; Ernest Marshall, Jr., of Reedsburg, WI; Cynthia Bigbee of Applegate, CA; and his grandchildren, Tricia Pearlswig, Kile Bigbee, Alisia and Jacob Marshall. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Anna Marie and their children, David and Minnie.
Ernie was born in Bonner Springs, KS on May 25, 1921 and was the seventh child of George and Minnie Marshall. He graduated from Manhattan High in Kansas and Santa Monica Junior College before serving his country as a Merchant Marine in WWII. During his service he spent 10 days in a life raft after his ship had been torpedoed. Upon his return he attended Purdue University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Horticulture and met the love of his life, Annie. Ernie went on to earn a Doctorate degree in Vegetable Crops at Cornell University and was instrumental in the development of chemical compounds that helped increase vegetable crop production around the world.
In his 25-plus years with Union Carbide Corporation, Ernie traveled the world using his intelligence and wit to develop close friendships as well as strong business relationships. His connections resulted in the Marshall Exchange Program. Each of his children was able to experience life with a family in another country and children from Argentina, France, Germany, Japan and Egypt enjoyed a year of American life with the Marshalls.
Ernie and Annie moved to Carmel Valley, California in 1972 where he continued to be involved with the American Agricultural Society and became an active member of the Carmel Valley Garden Club, Carmel Foundation, Mauian International Shuffleboard Association and Carmel Valley Historical Society. After his retirement Ernie and Annie continued to travel and he enjoyed being part of Sons in Retirement and Carmel Foundation Men's Discussion Group.
Those wishing to make donations in his honor are encouraged to donate to the Carmel Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 1612, Carmel Valley CA 93924-1612. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Heartland Hospice and Faithful Care Home for their assistance and support.

I am just learning of Ernie's passing.
Ernie and Annie were wonderful friends to my Mom and Dad when Ernie and Dad were PhD students at Cornell (before I was born). I will always remember the visits and the great vacation, the year after my dad died, to the Outer Banks.Lots of kids, seafood, sand and surf! It is a memory I have always looked back on fondly. Ernie and Annie made a point of keeping in touch with my Mom, which I know she really appreciated. We always looked forward to the annual holiday letter with the family picture. They were a great couple.

During my growing up years dad was the guy that played with us after dinner, had us work with him in his amazing garden, and took family vacations. We went to National Parks and always took the nature tours. He would walk around with us in the evenings and teach about the plants, birds, and wildlife we saw in our yards and neighborhoods. It was only as a mature adult that I began to know him. Hearing of his days in the children's home, his adventures in the merchant marines, his many jobs to make it
through to his PhD, his advancement in Union Carbide, and his awesome ability to keep in touch with his friends from the children's home on. He thought his wife and my mother Annie to be the best thing and never forgot that she was a graduate student while he was an undergrad therefore smarter than him. He smiled and winked and charmed his way through the world keeping an upbeat attitude. I hope that his strength, sense of adventure, joy, loyalty and hope will live on.

Just sitting here enjoying all the birds and the flowers and appreciating the love you inspired in me for nature, especially for birds and insects. To share another Ernieism " a weed is just a flower growing in the wrong place."
Thank you for helping me appreciate all the weeds in life.

To the family of dear Ernie and Annie, I am so very sorry for your loss. In a very short amount of time, your parents /grandparents, became very special friends to my parents, Alma and Ken, at The Mauian. After my first visit there I immediately realized that I didn't have to worry about how my parents would get along with Ernie living next door and his good care. Ernie and Annie couldn't have been more welcoming to them as "newcomers" to the February gang and to me when I visited. Ernie's constant smile and laughter was infectious. I hope that MISA (Maui Int'l Shuffleboard Assoc.) will always continue with Ernie's love and joyful spirit at it's heart.
Sincerely, Judy Batcheller Kao

Wow! Did Ernie have a welcoming group waiting at Heaven's Gates. The party was headded of course by Annie followed by David and Minnie. Bill and Billie have pulled a prank and given Ernie false keys. All are joyfully laughing. Les an Flo are leading the welcome song that Les wrote for the occasion. Ron and Ken are with the group. Dennis, Bernie and Dorothy are welcoming their friends from far and wide. There's a heck of a party going on at Heaven's Gate.
Annie and Ernie did not believe much nor want anyonee's grief. They wanted joy and that life should continue on without interruption. The one thing that Annie and Ernie wanted was that the Mauian International Shuffleboard Group continue on for generations. Rest assured that group will continue on with Ernie and Annie as our leaders.

Ernie, now you are safe in the arms of your angel, Annie. The world has witnessed the passing of a loving, intelligent and charismatic man. Ernie and Annie touched so many lives and made each of us smile. They will always be part of 'The Mauian mystique' especially when we see the green flash. My sympathies to the entire Marshall family. Your many wonderful memories will bring you joy and comfort.

I've only been a member of the Carmel Valley Garden Association for a short while compared to Annie and Ernie - 13 years compared to their nearly 40 years. But I cherish Annie and Ernie and their wonderful smiles. It was truly a treat getting to know them.

Big Ern. Teacher, Mentor, Head honcho, Country bumpkin, Genius, Sophisticate, Jokester...
My friend.
After 65 years, He only had to spend 1 year without his sweet Annie by his side. Now the two of them are on adventures together for eternity. And Ernie is no doubt cracking everyone up the whole way!!! What a Great man he was. He will be missed...
To Ernie, Cyndy, Linda Sue, Pam and all the rest of the Marshall family, my deepest sympathies go out to you. :(

Well; Uncle Ernie is the last of that generation on both sides of my family. What a great story it would make of Ernie's life that started with extreme poverty and; because of his motivation and drive, personality and kindness; he rose above the masses and surely put his mark on history. The last time I called he said: "Marlin, this is probably the last time I can talk to you" Unquote; and it WAS. Because of Ernie my father; Dr G Edw. Marshall had a better life and had the travels of his life time to Africa as a working Entomologist. with the help of Ernie acting in his behalf. He is sorely missed.

As I read the obituary for Mr. Ernest Marshall my heart is warmed by the beautiful and exciting life he lived. I never knew Mr. Marshall but know that if I did, I would have known a true genuine man. I am a High School classmate of Charlie Marshall Pearce (class of 1976). My prayer is that you find comfort in the beautiful memories you have to reflect upon in the days ahead. Peace be with you.
